The Sustainability Double Degree prepares students to integrate sustainability into varied disciplinary and career pathways and to be agents of positive change in their professions and their communities.
Expand Your Horizons and Your Options
The Sustainability Double Degree (B.S.) is available on the Corvallis campus, Cascades campus, and through Oregon State Ecampus. Current OSU students can complete the double degree as an addition to their primary degree program.
For example, Oregon State business students can add the sustainability degree and earn both a bachelor's in business administration and a bachelor's in sustainability, which would make them competitive job candidates in fields such as sustainability marketing and market research, sustainable products development, and strategic planning.
Built for Accessibility
The Sustainability Double Degree was designed to complement all OSU degree programs and previously earned bachelor's degrees. Our students add sustainability to their work toward degrees as diverse as natural resources, political science, ecological engineering, and Spanish.
Coursework and Practical Experience
All Sustainability students take two courses—Sustainability Assessment and Sustainable Communities—in which they explore the environmental, social, and economic pillars of sustainability, learn to engage in systems thinking, examine how people are striving to create livable communities within finite ecological limits, and study methods for measuring and evaluating progress towards sustainability goals.
In addition, students choose one course from each of the three dimensions of sustainability—ecology, society, and economics. These courses offer foundational knowledge in the science of critical environmental issues, social theory as it relates to the sustainability movement, as well as environmental economics and policy.
Double degree students complete their sustainability credits by designing a Practicum experience and course of electives that supports their goals and interests. The Practicum requirement allows students to deepen their knowledge of sustainability concepts and gain practical experience in an area of sustainability they chose. To meet the Practicum requirement, students participate in an internship, research project, study abroad program, or service-learning project.

Minor Requirements
Completion of the Sustainability minor requires 27 credits (including a minimum of 12 upper-division credits) within the 180-credit minimum for graduation. Courses from a student’s major course of study may count towards minor requirements. Students who minor in Sustainability take the same core classes as double degree students but do not complete a Practicum.

Post-Baccalaureate Degree
Students who have already completed an undergraduate degree can apply to earn a post-baccalaureate degree in Sustainability. Post-bacc students do not need to choose a primary major and can pursue Sustainability as a standalone major. OSU graduates who have completed their first undergraduate degree at OSU must earn 32 credits towards the Sustainability major. Post-bacc students who have earned their prior degree at an institution other than OSU must earn 32 credits towards the Sustainability major as well as a total of 45 credits at OSU to meet residency requirements.
